Why a mattress needs cleaning

A person gives off between 200 and 400 millilitres of moisture a night, and around a gram and a half of skin particles. The sheet absorbs some of it. The rest passes through and stays in the mattress.

That is also why dust mites collect in mattresses. Mites do not bite and are not dangerous in themselves, but what they leave behind is among the most common causes of a blocked nose in the morning, sneezing and irritated eyes in otherwise healthy people.

Extraction pulls out a large part of what has built up deep down, not just at the surface. We work both sides, in your home, and by the evening you can sleep on the mattress again.

  • We clean both sides, not just the top
  • Anti-mite treatment on request
  • We remove sweat and bodily fluid marks
  • We remove odours with an unperfumed neutraliser
  • Ready to sleep on after 5 to 7 hours

  • Latex mattresses
  • Memory foam, with less water
  • Hybrid mattresses
  • Children's mattresses and cots

Problems we solve

  • Mites and their allergens, deep down
  • Sweat marks and yellowing
  • Urine marks, from children and adults
  • Stale odour
  • Skin particles and dust
  • Mould spotting in damp conditions
  • Blood marks, while they are fresh

What comes out and what does not

So you know what to expect, we say in advance what comes out and what does not.

Comes out in most cases

  • Mites, skin particles and dust from deep down
  • Fresh and not very old sweat marks
  • Odours, including staleness
  • Urine marks, treated with a neutraliser
  • General refreshing of the surface
  • Fresh blood, worked on with cold water

Difficult or impossible

  • Deep yellowing from years of sweat, it lightens but does not vanish
  • Mould that has penetrated the filling
  • Ink and hair dye marks
  • Deformed or collapsed filling
  • Torn or disintegrating cover
  • Mattresses with a waterproof top layer

We do not touch mattresses with mould in the filling. Cleaning does not solve that, and the honest thing is to tell you to replace it.

How the work goes

Inspection and test

We check the label, the filling type and the condition of the cover. Memory foam absorbs water and holds it, so with it we use less water and extract for longer.

10 minutes

Deep vacuuming

With a turbo head across the whole surface, along the seams and around the edges where most of it collects. This is the stage that removes the bulk of the mites and skin particles.

15 minutes per side

Stain treatment

Sweat, urine and blood are cleaned three different ways. Urine we treat with a neutraliser that breaks down the salts instead of covering them.

depends on condition

Extraction on both sides

We turn the mattress and repeat. Do only the top and half the problem stays, and underneath the risk of damp and mould is higher because the mattress sits against the frame.

40 to 50 minutes

Anti-mite treatment and drying

On request we apply a residual anti-mite product. Then we dry it off with forced ventilation.

20 minutes

Why it is worth doing once a year

We treat the underside too

The underside is in contact with the frame and carries a higher risk of damp and mould. Treating only the top leaves half the problem.

No perfume on top

We use unperfumed neutralisers. Fragrances only mask the smell, and you sleep on this mattress for eight hours every night.

Anti-mite treatment

On request, with residual action. Worth it for allergy sufferers and children, optional for everyone else.

Sleep on it the same night

With proper extraction the mattress is dry in 5 to 7 hours. So it is best to book us for the morning.

An honest assessment

If the mattress has mould in the filling or has collapsed, we will tell you that cleaning will not solve it.

Setting matched to the filling

Sprung, latex and memory foam absorb water differently and want different amounts of moisture.

The same team, the same standard, every visit.

Four mistakes people make cleaning a mattress themselves

Here is what to avoid if you clean the mattress yourself.

Soaking it with water and product

Water goes in easily and comes out with difficulty. A mattress that is wetted and not extracted dries for days, and mould starts in the filling.

A steam cleaner on memory foam

The foam absorbs the moisture and holds it. The result is a mattress that looks clean and smells stale a week later.

Bleach on a urine mark

Bleach whitens the mark but does not break down the salts that cause the smell. It returns every time humidity rises.

Bicarbonate left for months

Bicarbonate absorbs odour for a few days. Left for long it works down between the fibres and then has to be extracted separately.

If you have an allergy, what to realistically expect

Extraction takes out a large part of the mites and the allergens built up deep down, and most clients with allergies feel a difference within a week.

Mites gradually come back, and that is normal. It is worth repeating the clean every six to twelve months. A protector washed at 60 degrees helps too.

„My son woke up congested every morning and we had tried everything else. After they cleaned the mattress we felt the difference within a few days. We have done it once a year since.“

Petya N., client in Mladost, two mattresses

Worth knowing

How often

Every six to twelve months, regardless of how clean the sheet looks. A mattress does not get visibly dirty, it saturates gradually, which makes the clean easy to put off for years.

For allergy sufferers, small children and homes with pets, better every six months. For a rarely used guest room, once every two years is enough.

Memory foam, latex and sprung

Sprung mattresses absorb the least moisture and take the usual setting. Latex is dense and the water stays largely on the surface, which makes it straightforward to treat.

Memory foam is the opposite. It is porous, absorbs water like a sponge and holds it. So it is treated with reduced moisture and extended extraction rather than the usual setting.

When cleaning will not help

  • Collapsed filling with a visible dip, that is wear, not soiling
  • Mould that has penetrated the filling rather than sitting on the cover
  • A torn cover leaving the filling exposed
  • A mattress more than fifteen years old, replacing it makes more sense
  • A waterproof top layer, which will not let the product through either

Frequently asked questions

How long does the mattress take to dry?

Usually 5 to 7 hours with good ventilation. So it is best to book us for the first half of the day, so you can sleep on it the same night.

Do you treat both sides?

Yes, as standard. The underside is in contact with the frame and carries a higher damp risk, so treating only the top leaves half the problem.

Can a memory foam mattress be cleaned?

Yes, but with less water and longer extraction. The foam is porous and holds the water, so the usual setting is not right for it.

What is anti-mite treatment?

A residual product applied after the extraction that slows the mites coming back. Worth it for allergy sufferers and children, optional for everyone else.

Do urine marks come out?

Fresh ones almost always. On older ones we work with a neutraliser that breaks down the salts. The mark may lighten without going completely, but the smell usually goes.

Will yellowing from sweat disappear?

It lightens considerably, but a mattress used for years without a protector will not go white again. We say so in advance.

Does it help with allergies?

Usually yes. Extraction takes out a large part of the mites and allergens. The effect holds for six to twelve months, then it is done again.

Should I remove the bedding?

Yes, take off the sheet and protector before we arrive. If the protector is washable we can treat it separately.

Can I sleep on it the same night?

Yes, if the work is in the morning and the room is aired. Before we leave, we check that it is dry.

Do you treat mattresses in hotels?

Yes, we work with hotels and guest houses, usually out of season or on low-occupancy days.

Is there a minimum booking?

Yes, €25. For a single child's mattress it works out better to combine it with another service.

Will there be a smell of product afterwards?

No. We use unperfumed neutralisers. While the mattress dries there is a faint damp smell, but it goes completely.

Can it be combined with sofa cleaning?

Yes, and it is a common request. In one visit it works out cheaper than two separate ones.

What about blood marks?

Treated with cold water and an appropriate product. Fresh blood almost always lifts, old blood rarely does completely.

Do you work at weekends?

Yes, Saturday is a working day for us. Sunday by prior arrangement.

How is payment handled and do you invoice?

Cash once you have seen the work, or by bank transfer. We issue invoices on request.

What if the mattress has mould?

If the mould is only on the cover we treat it. If it has penetrated the filling we will not remove it, and we will advise replacement rather than take your money.

What if I am not happy?

Tell us within 24 hours and we come back free of charge. If the result genuinely cannot be made better, we tell you that at the inspection.

Still have a question?
