"Eco" is a word used far too loosely. Here is what actually sits behind it, and where it matters for your home.
Where the difference is real
The main difference is not how clean the surface gets, but what is left behind afterwards. Chlorine and ammonia based products leave residues and fumes that linger in enclosed rooms for hours. This is especially noticeable in bathrooms without a window and in children's rooms.

- Biodegradability, the product breaks down instead of accumulating in wastewater
Where the difference is small
For everyday dust, floors, worktops and glass, a good biodegradable product combined with microfibre performs just as well. Much of the result here comes from the technique and the material, not the chemistry.
When harsh chemicals still have a place
We will be honest: for well-established mould on silicone, for deeply set limescale, and for disinfection after illness in the home, specialised products do the job faster. In those cases we apply them to the affected area only, not throughout the home.
How to recognise a genuine eco product
- It carries a specific certification (EU Ecolabel, for example), not just green packaging
- The composition is listed, not hidden behind a "patented formula"
- No chlorine, ammonia or strong synthetic fragrances
- The manufacturer states biodegradability as a percentage and a timeframe
